This is really weird.  I've had 2 people complain about this now but
doing a by-hand investigation of the files (I've literally taken the
bindist over to another location and unpacked it by hand) works
without a single problem.  The source tarballs are fine.  Harrumph.

Sheesh.  I have no idea! :-(
