The author was apoligizing for grouping the BSDs in with the "free as in frufru" "Free" that the GPL crowd has come up with. As he tells us in the commentary, other software mentioned in the article doesn't fit the frufru "Free" description either and including them in the mention of 'conflating' would have made things clearer.
