Ah.  That makes more sense.

Do you come from a System V.3 background?

The disk cache is managed dynamically by the virtual memory system.
If you're interested, start the program top (there's a man page).

There's no way to influence it externally short of rewriting the
virtual memory system, and I can't think of any reason to do that.
FreeBSD has one of the best virtual memory systems you will find
anywhere.
