A data point for the archives:

After getting past the Torx #4TR fasteners
and updating the firmware in Windoze,
the Lucent Tech MiniPCI wireless NIC we got recently
is recognized and works on our Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600
running 4.7-R.

# The /etc/pccard.conf(5) entry:
card "Lucent Technologies" "WaveLAN/IEEE"
        config  0x1 "wi" ?

# Relevant messages caught by syslogd(8):
/kernel: wi0 at port 0x240-0x27f irq 11 slot 0 on pccard0
/kernel: wi0: 802.11 address: 00:02:2d:43:xx:xx
/kernel: wi0: using Lucent Embedded WaveLAN/IEEE
/kernel: wi0: Lucent Firmware: Station 8.42.01
pccardd[48]: wi0: Lucent Technologies (WaveLAN/IEEE) inserted.

This appears to disable the system's PCMCIA Slot #0 (lower);
the upper slot works, but is now identified as slot 2 to pccardc(8).

No WEP enabled -- we use SSH connections when they are called for.
