I guess you don't know about our /dev/pcaudio device, which can and does 
play .au files.  The quality is not the same as my GUS card, obviously, 
and it loads the machine down something awful, but it does play 
recognizable .au files.  I know, I tried it myself awhile back.

You have to have the pcaudio device compiled in the kernel for this to 
work, of course.
