I don't agree that this is a Dell-specific "feature". I have also had
problems with a locking keyboard. The machine is a Kopak (Sager, Prostar
etc) 486DX100 laptop.

I had problems with locking keyboard if I pressed the extra FN key (used to
alter brightness, contrast, volume etc) while running 2.0.x. It got fixed
sometime during 2.1.x branch I think. Now with the new 2.2.1 it sometimes
locks during installation (have run it multiple times). This happened last
time when switching virtual consoles. Another sure keyboard lock is to start
XFree.
