I made further tests, and I've discovered that the real culprit is ipfw/natd on the Mac. When I share LAN/Internet access on the Mac from eth to airport wifi, ipfw/natd are configured in such a way that my eth network crawls. When I've changed NICs (between onboard and PCI-X) the internet sharing was still configured to use onboard eth. But if I reconfigure the internet sharing on the Mac to use the PCI-X NIC, the speed lowers to 21 MB/s instead of 40.
