I don't know if I have a stock answer, BUT.  How is your FTP throuput.  Is
it exhibiting the same problems as samba or is FTP consistent using put and
get?

The reason I ask, is at this point, it's hard to tell if it's a hd or
network I/O issue or if it's an issue specific to samba.
