Thank-you all for the suggestions. I recompiled the kernel with MAXUSERS=128 and there was no noticeable change. Bringing the interface down then up again also produced no noticeable effect. I have set up the cron job as suggested. If the cron job fails to keep the connection alive I might have a go at the source.
