I was trying to clean this code up and thought I could 'fix' the sprintf() stuff while I was here. I guess I got a bit overzealous.. since Kris was already here previously. I also didn't test the changes very well. When the next diff gets committed, it'll be stress-tested to make sure it still works. I'm also sorry I didn't reply to the messages sooner, but my mail servers suddenly got shutdown, right before my commit message went through... what a coincidence. *deep sigh* Apologies to MarkM & John for smearing their names with my attempts to gain some clue.
