The real reason behind this that "extended" partitions are nothing more
than a cludge of DOS, to support slicing the disk in more than 3
so-called 'primary' partitions.

FreeBSD's disklabels are extremely more convenient and flexible,
therefore no need to support what is considered a terrible DOS
"feature".  Since "extended" partitions are such a horrid cludge that
they are, you can only use "primary" partitions for your FreeBSD
installations.
