IMO it can't be done. Not with XFree. Period.

What I did manage was to put another GUI system, and it works, but it's
rather primitive... You can get a copy from
http://www.freebsd.org/~abial/preview/preview2.tgz

Not really... I came to the above conclusion, and for now the work on it
stopped. There are some pointers on ~abial/small.html.

Not yet (at least publicly available) - I started to use CVS after v0.31,
so this is really the beginning of the CVS tree.
