If you look at 'man adduser' in 2.0.5 (you didn't say what you were 
using) the very first paragraph lists the potentials of each user being a 
unique ("UNIQ" in the page) group. It basically says that you can then 
not have to worry about others in their group having access to their 
files unwittingly.

Whether you agree with this or not, I'd say this indicates it's a 
feature, not a bug. (Or at least that's the cover story. <grin>)
