Generally speaking, if you've got a question, you should first
look in the "FreeBSD Handbook" at
<http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/index.html>; to see if it has already
been addressed. If not, then check the FAQ at
<http://www.freebsd.org/FAQ/FAQ.html>. If it's still not addressed,
then search the archives of the FreeBSD mailing lists via the
interface at
<http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html#mailinglists>. If you
haven't found any answers there, I'd suggest going to Deja.com (or
some other news-via-web site) and doing a search on the
comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.* newsgroups to see if anyone else has recently
discussed this issue there.

After doing all the above, if you *still* can't find any answers,
then your questions should be sent to freebsd-questions@freebsd.org.

Only if you're subscribed to a particular FreeBSD mailing list
*other* than -questions, you're tracking that particular version of
the OS on one of your servers (or otherwise actively participating in
the furtherance of that activity), and you know for a fact that it's
relevant to the list in question, should you then post it to that
list.

If you should happen to post something to -questions and it
really belongs somewhere else, appropriate people will be glad to
help you find the right list.

All of this information and more is available at the FreeBSD
site, most with appropriate links from the main page at
<http://www.freebsd.org/>.

Of course, these are all things that everyone who is subscribed
to the -stable mailing list already knows, which is almost certainly
the reason why you got the rather testy responses from other people
along the lines of "Why are you posting this here?"

Unix is like a wigwam -- no Gates, no Windows, and an Apache inside.
Unix is very user-friendly. It's just picky who its friends are.
