Huge thanks to all for replying. The problem was the fact that 
/stand/sysinstall
does not add users to group wheel correctly, or to be more exact, the 
user is
not added to the /etc/group file. Once I did that I was able to su till 
my cows
came home :-)

Right, but wheel is still the group that can su.  Did you make sure the
permissions were right?  What happened when you tried to su?
