Use the emacs package and pkg_add.  It'll install all the dependencies for 
you.  (I think it's in /packages/editors or somesuch)

Which X Server did you install?  

The proper command to start the X server is "startx".

You need to look in LINT and copy in the ATAPI options, then recompile, 
copy, and reboot.
