With commit r233944 (see below, commit to sbin/init/init.c), it isn't possible anymore starting xdm properly from /etc/ttys. Start fails and reports:

Update the sources of FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT/amd64 to the most recent version (r234092), recompile world (or sbin/init/init.c) and try starting your X11 environment by xdm via /etc/ttys. In most cases, start will fail.
>Fix:
Login as root, start xdm via console. In most cases, this will start xdm, but I also experienced erratic behaviour and failing starts.
I also realized that manipulation (even simply editing comments) in some of xdm's startup files, like "Xservers" or "Xaccess" will make xdm sometimes start. This is not reproducible and erratic.
Reverting sbin/init/init.c to the previous state, r233943, helps also.
