dmesg recognizes the Athlon as a 686 class CPU. 

I have the following in my Athlon K7 custom kernel config:

machine         i386
cpu             I686_CPU

Works great, no panics, very stable.

 FreeBSD 4.0-STABLE #0: Tue May 16 22:55:19 CDT 2000
