I beg to disagree.  I have in the past set up a number of research
scenarios where it was desirable to use 'a ton of aliases' to create
a ton of subnets, each with different characteristics.  These different
subnets are in turn routed through different devices downstream
based on their subnets.  It is very convenient to use a subnet and
an alias to pick out a certain pathway through a maze of  simulation
devices and nodes that are all interconnected.
