Hello,

Sounds like a winmodem to me.  If it is it won't work with anything but
windows.  Try it in DOS, if it work there, and I suspect it won't you
are out of luck.  These modems are garbage (IMO).  You save 5-10 bucks on
them but it is definitly not worth it.
 
I used RH for a while then switched to FreeBSD 'cause it seems a lot more
like a true UNIX system.  RH is nice but there are a lot of hacks to make
things more "user friendly" that may cause confusion if you go to another
UNIX OS.
