No, this means your virtual consoles don't exist.  :( 

they're ttyV, not ttyD...

If you can login, then su; cd /dev; ./MAKEDEV vty8.  

That should rebuild them.

You should be using the cua devices (/dev/cuaa0, etc) for dialout.
