Sorry this has continued!  I got the right answer from about four
people: for NO good reason, I had copied a line from LINT into my
kernel's config file which I shouldn't have, namely:

options         USERCONFIG_BOOT         #imply -c and parse info area

---and that's why the kernel always booted in -c mode.
>From now on, any kernel reconfig will include a close look at
the config file diffs!
