Finally a question I can help with!!!

Check out /usr/ports/misc/screen... I have only been using it for a
short
while, but it should do what you need.

Here are some articles that got me started:

http://www.freebsddiary.org/screen.php
http://palm.freshmeat.net/articles/view/581/  ## more about a window
manager, but it does contain some good information about screen at the 
beginning of the article.

I have been using the command
screen -D -R 

which I found in the man page.
