But if what it says in the comment (about installing stuff in the build stage) is true, prefix/mtree race shouldn't be an issue since mtree won't be run until the real install stage. On the other hand, it is rather broken to install stuff while it's still in the build stage. You can move the actual build to the install stage (see x11/auis for an example of this), that looks like a very short "build" followed by a lengthy "install" but at least that won't violate the principle of least surprise.
