Did you set up your /etc/hosts file?

Did you put 127.0.0.1 in your DNS database files?

You never want to login as root via telnet.  ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS login as
your self and then su to root, do what you need to do then type exit to
get out of the root shell. You can totally hose your system screwing
around as root.
