It should work as IDE (compatible mode) and as SATA(AHCI).

Can you tell us about the chipset? Is it an intel oder nvidia?
You should check 
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/ata/ata-pci.h if it 
already knows about your chipset.
