Btw., the question about which printer also belongs here.  I didn't
look at nlpt yet, but i remember i once had to tweak lpt in order to
print with decent speed on some HP DeskJet printers since the deskjets
seem to have a very weird signal handling (they delay one of the
signals, apparently to work around bugs in the SM-DOS printer driver).
If nlpt doesn't have these tweaks so far (you can find them in the CVS
diff), this could result in very slow printing (like one page per
several minutes) even in interrupt mode.
