I've tried this on my Fujitsu Lifebook S-4576 and KDE's startup sounds
now work where it did not before.

The dmesg output was:

pcm0: <Intel 443MX> port 0x1cc0-0x1cff,0x1000-0x10ff irq 9 at device 0.1 on pci0
pcm0: ac97 codec id 0x594d4800
pcm0: ac97 codec features 18 bit DAC, 5 bit master volume, no 3D Stereo Enhancement
pcm0: ac97 primary codec extended features AMAP
