Danny,

I am trying to get my sound to work and I got your email from my little
archive of messages on freebsd-questions. I am providing a dmesg dump for
you. I have also copied to the list. I would appreciate any help you can
offer.

I followed the instructions here.

http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/sound.html

I included the following lines in my kernel configuration.

device pcm
device sbc

I am wondering if I should not have sbc but I would guess that would not
hurt if I have it in there. That man page does not make it clear if I
should include sbc. My sound card is a Sound Blaster at least it is
supposed to be but it is really an Ensonique 1371.

After I rebooted with the new kernel I ran MAKEDEV...

cd /dev
sh MAKEDEV snd0

I can now run the following command on sndstat and here is my output...

> cat /dev/sndstat
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Dec 15 2000 20:21:40
Installed devices:
pcm0: <SB DSP 4.16 (ViBRA16X)> at io 0x220 irq 5 drq 1:3 (1p/1r channels
duplex)

So everything seems to be set up properly and I have all the device files
in /dev but when I run GQmpeg and other programs like cdcontrol I am not
getting the expected output. When I play an mp3 with GQmpeg I get these
odd noises like it is trying to work, but it is all screwed up. I am
wondering if there is anything I can do.

One thing I noticed is that /dev/midi does not symlink to
/dev/midi0. There is not /dev/midi. But the other sound devices have
symlinks in place. I am not sure if that means anything. I generally let
MAKEDEV do what it does. I had sound working for me under 3.x at one
point but it seems much has changed for 4.x.

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.
