Hello Dick,

Seems as if you have some other program listening on the
same TCP/IP port that MySQL server is trying to use.
Please try changing the default values.
(Defaults are: TCP/IP port = 3306, UNIX_SOCKET = /tmp/mysql.sock)
Just in case change both and start mysqld for example like:

mysqld --port=3307 --socket=/tmp/mysql.sock2 (and the other options
if needed)

Then try connection using 'mysql --port=3307 --socket=/tmp/mysql.sock2'

See mysqld --help.
