The 3c509 is an ISA card that is not capable of 100BaseTX. The 3c905 is a PCI card that is capable of 100BaseTX. I would expect that speed is auto-negotiated, but you can force the speed using the "mediaopt 100baseTX" command line option to ifconfig.
