While the line between 'intuitive' and 'familiar' is not sharp, I
think there are some things that qualify as 'intuitive'.

'Enter' should select the highlighted selection. Tab and up/down
arrows should move from selection to selection. Escape should
back up one menu. sysinstall is unintuitive, not unfamiliar. I've
used it dozens of times, and every time I curse whoever came up with
it's menu navigation scheme.

I was a bit over my head when I installed FreeBSD the first time, too.
I'd done Linux (several flavors) before, but that wasn't enough. Am
I ed1, or what? where's eth0? Luckily, I sprang for the bundle from
windriver that included Greg Lehey's book.

Otherwise, FreeBSD probably would have gone the same way as every
RedHat installation I've tried: Could probably be done, but I know
how to install SuSE with less effort.
