Thanx for the help, especially from Joe.

Some more searching revealed that gpilot USB support is for linux only.
The uvisor driver for FreeBSD attaches my palm as a ucom0.

kldload ucom
kldload uvisor
gpilotd-control-applet

choose:
Port: /dev/ucom0
speed: 115200
type: serial
