fp extensions.

i'm not a good enough geek to tell you exactly how they work but i can
tell you what they do.

if anyone out there does know details on how they work, and perhaps has a
good document on them, they would be greatly appreciated.

aside from being demonic, fp server ext. allow people using MS FrontPage
for website design to publish directly to the server in a MS 'friendly'
way. they modify the permissions on the 'webs' you apply them to so that
people can publish to the site without using ftp and without even having
an account on the server. they set up their own permissions and they put
a bunch of directories in the 'web' that keep track of things for msfp.
having the fp extensions installed allows fancy msfp 'web bots' to work.
like counters, feedback forms, hover buttons etc. it also allows people
to update their webs real time, you can connect to the server with
msfpexplorer (the publishing program) and move pages/graphics/soundfiles
around in the website and msfpexplorer keeps track of where you put them
all so there are no broken links in the web. it will also index your web
for you if you set things up right.

the bad side of it all is that the fp_install.sh is very poorly written
with a number of traps that will send you down a dead end or permanent
loop. the fpsrvadm.exe program is rather elusive as to what it wants as
well and is very tricky to get working right.

all that being said, when things do work, they work great. and it's a
piece of cake to rearange a website. there are of course huge security
issues. fpsext are not _necessary_ because fp does have a way to export
webs using ftp, however this usually breaks the custom fp components which
cheezy designers like to use because they are easy and get the job done.
most isp's charge about $25.00 extra to put fp server extensions on
sites. so they are valuable in that way as well.

i'm in the thick of working though the glitches with the fp_install.sh,
but i'm not a programmer. if there is sommeone out there who would be
willing to have a look at this script in and clean it up a little, there
would be a lot of people who would appreciate it.
