Ah... I found the problem...

I had set PS1='`tput md`\$`tput me` '
(so that the prompt $ or # appears in bold but the main text doesn't).

It works fine if I have PS1='\$ '.

I think this may be a glitch, but it's quite obscure if it is---it is?
