Is your input filter specified correctly in printcap? Have you kill -HUP'd
lpd?

Test your filter by running it from the command line:

cat file_to_print | /path/to/filter > file

If your script is erroring you'll see it on the console or in the output
file.  Sounds like you're not running gs properly.
