Sorry. Frustration leakover. After poking at my ethernet pccard to get it to 
work on an interrupt supported by sysinstall, I got installed via nfs.
I updated to about ~week old -STABLE, and got some boot -v output:

(custom kernel, old-style ata0, ata1 device in config)
