What kind of video card do you have (run SuperProbe to find out)? What X server are you trying to run (ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/X and see what it points to)? There are other variables as well. Mouse configuration (you're not *sure* if you're using moused?), color depth, ... I saw this type of behavior briefly while I was setting up X on a new box recently. Big white block, about the size of a WindowMaker dock icon. Turned out I was running the wrong server altogether, and had also specificed the wrong monitor specs. Have you tried running XF86Setup? Definitely the easiest way to deal with X configuration.
