The password field isn't locked.  /etc/passwd is actually not used by
anything any more.  It's just there to make people happy when they look
for it, basically :)  Your problem must be somewhere else.

Make sure you have installed the DES libraries; otherwise your system
won't be able to validate any of the passwords in NIS.
