mplayer doesn't depend on any special ports threads like linuxthreads.
In fact, all these are included in a FreeBSD base system.

I did a buildworld/installworld/mergemaster and installed Xfree,
mplayer and so on from scratch with empty /usr/X11R6 and /usr/local,
and there were no problems.
So, I'm pretty sure it's no problem caused by the base system or the
port dependencies...
Perhaps there is a little problem with portupgrade, I don't know, I
don't use it. I have very good experiences in building the whole system
from scratch from time to time.
