Your backup strategy should follow how important the machine is.  for
example, if it's a mission-critical box, you should certainly back it up
frequently, while your personal workstation could lag a bit (mine has..it
could use it's first backup).  

If you need to buy a backup solution, see if you can run amanda on a
machine with a tape drive or buy a SCSi tape drive for the box.

You can use sysconfig or just edit /etc/rc.conf directly and modify the
ifconfig_ed0 line.  Replace ed with the driver your ethernet card is
using...you'll see the line.
