I've being using Qmail for a time and I do like /usr/bin/mail. Qmail
comes with a wrapper called /var/qmail/bin/qail which does the work
(converting Maildir dir to Mbox file), I've put just that in my .bashrc
script:

alias mail='/var/qmail/bin/qail'
MAIL="$HOME/Maildir/.mbox
MAILDIR="$HOME/Maildir"
MAILTMP="$HOME/Maildir/.tmp
export MAIL MAILDIR MAILTMP

that must work to you too.
BTW, i do not use qmail anymore, i've find something even better.
Postfix :) With Maildir mbox style.
