Perhaps passwd should warn you, if you run passwd without arguments. A much better and easy to implement solution would be: % su [...] # passwd Changing local password for knarf. knarf's new password: [...] What do you think about this? I think I've seen something similar on AIX, if you rlogin there and get asked for a password it asks for "<user>'s password" instead of just "password:".
