Argh, more work, this is currently a production system, so upgrades are a
pain, and I am waiting until 2.1R comes out, or maybe 2.0.5R at the
   earliest.

i didn't experience this problem until 2.0.5a. my fix was to add

arp -s spider.csrv.uidaho.edu 0:40:5:17:8c:27 pub

to the end of my /etc/netstart. that was the way i fixed it...

like you, i wasn't mixing anything...stock 2.0.5a, and i hadn't deleted the
route to localhost.
