There is an NCR RAID controller available that I tried on a different
system three or four years ago.  You could use it without any kernel
work by hooking a serial terminal up to it for maintenance (rebuilding
drives, setting RAID level etc) and having it come on line as a
huge disk.

Sorry I can't give the exact model or availability.
