They're nulls, not spaces.  You can probably frob the termcap database
to remove these (best to create a new entry called vt100-fast).
Read the termcap(5) manpage and look for the discussion on padding.
Note that the stock vt100 termcap entry's padding _is_ required for 
correct operation of a vt200 terminal.
