There is a section on the ports collection.  Actually, the place you install
the ports is not critical (except, maybe,  for the distfiles directory,
I haven't had to look into the Makefiles...).  But /usr/ports would
probably be best.

Oh yes you can :-)

try 'get ports.tar.gz' - the ftpd at ftp.freebsd.org is smart enough to
tar and gzip the structure for you.  You can then unwind the resulting
tarball at your leisure.
