What I did to get a successful connect out of my (internal...) modem was
to:

1. Select com1 from the net device screen
2. Use set device to change it to cuaa1
3. Run term

It seems that if you try and connect with term before changing the device,
ppp will ignore the device change later, which caused me no end of
head-banging when I was attempting to install 2.1.5-R.
