ppp is probably better for dialing out, because it can handle scripting
automatically. pppd requires the use of "chat" to get it working. pppd
works nicely on a PPP server, though.

"ps aux" and look at the start time. You could also write a program to
tally up the connect/disconnect times in the log files, but it's probably
not worth the effort.
