Maybe because the GUS Max is _not_ pnp.

I already reported this problem 2 months ago:

/kernel: Checking for GUS Plug-n-Play ...
/kernel: No Plug-n-Play devices were found
/kernel: gus0 at 0x220 irq 11 drq 6 on isa
/kernel: GUS PNP (CS4231A)> at 0x32c dma 6,6<Gravis PNP (512k)> at 0x220 irq 11 dma 6

And when playing:

/kernel: isa_dma_acquire: channel 6 already in use
/kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?

This is not an IRQ/DRQ config error because
- I have checked if there was a conflict.
- the old sound code works.

I just tried again on another machine: another GUS max with a different
configuration:
device gus0 at isa? port 0x220 irq 15 drq 6 vector gusintr
The machine hangs during boot just after:

Checking for GUS Plug-n-Play ...
Board Vendor ID: TCM5095 Board Serial Number: 975c0a6a
